Cancer & Critical Illness Insurance
Supplemental coverage that pays a lump-sum cash benefit when you are diagnosed with cancer, heart attack, stroke, or other covered conditions.
About Cancer & Critical Illness Insurance
Cancer and critical illness policies pay you a lump-sum cash benefit if you are diagnosed with a specific covered condition such as invasive cancer, heart attack, stroke, end-stage renal failure, major organ transplant, or paralysis. The benefit is in addition to anything paid by your medical plan.
These policies are designed to help with the indirect costs of a serious diagnosis — travel to specialty centers, experimental treatments, lost income, household help, and other bills that don't show up on a hospital invoice.
Critical illness insurance is not health insurance and is not regulated as such. Always read the list of covered conditions and benefit triggers carefully.
- Lump-sum benefit for invasive cancer
- Benefit for non-invasive (in-situ) cancer at a reduced amount
- Benefit for heart attack, stroke, and major organ failure
- Wellness benefit for covered cancer screenings (varies by plan)
- Some plans pay multiple benefits for separate conditions
- Pre-existing conditions during the look-back period
- Conditions not on the policy's covered list
- Skin cancer (other than melanoma) on most plans
