About Dental Insurance

Stand-alone dental insurance helps pay for routine cleanings, exams, X-rays, fillings, extractions, root canals, crowns, and sometimes orthodontia. In New Jersey it is sold by private carriers directly, through employers, and as add-ons to many Medicare Advantage and Marketplace plans.

Most plans pay 100% for preventive services, around 80% for basic services after a small deductible, and around 50% for major services — with an annual maximum benefit. Waiting periods may apply to major services if you are not coming from prior dental coverage.

Adult dental is not part of an ACA Essential Health Benefit, so it is usually purchased separately. Pediatric dental is included in every ACA-compliant Marketplace plan for children.

What it covers

Routine cleanings, exams, and X-rays (preventive)

Anyone can buy individual or family dental coverage from private carriers; eligibility for employer-sponsored or Marketplace add-on plans depends on the underlying plan.
