Hospital Indemnity Insurance

Supplemental policy that pays a lump-sum cash benefit when you are admitted to the hospital, regardless of your medical insurance.

About Hospital Indemnity Insurance

Hospital indemnity insurance is a voluntary supplemental product that pays a fixed cash benefit directly to you when you are admitted to a hospital, transferred to the ICU, or stay for a covered period of time. The benefit is paid in addition to whatever your medical plan pays.

The cash can be used for anything — copays, deductibles, lost wages, child care, transportation, household bills. Many people use a hospital indemnity plan to soften the out-of-pocket exposure of a high-deductible health plan or a Medicare Advantage plan.

Hospital indemnity is not major medical coverage and is not a substitute for ACA-compliant health insurance.

What it covers
  • Lump-sum benefit on hospital admission
  • Daily benefit for covered hospital stays
  • Additional benefit for ICU confinement
  • Some plans pay for outpatient surgery, ambulance, or ER visits
  • Benefits paid directly to you
What it does NOT cover
  • Routine medical, dental, or vision care
  • Pre-existing conditions during the look-back period (varies by carrier)
  • Custodial or long-term care
Who qualifies

Most adults can purchase hospital indemnity coverage; some plans have age limits and most ask basic health questions.
