Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage)

An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurers — typically bundles Parts A, B, and D plus extra benefits.

About Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage)

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are offered by private insurers under contract with Medicare. They must cover everything Original Medicare covers and they almost always include Part D drug coverage. Most plans add benefits Original Medicare does not, such as routine dental, vision, hearing, fitness, and over-the-counter allowances.

Most Advantage plans use HMO or PPO networks, which means you save money by using contracted doctors and hospitals. Plans set their own copays, coinsurance, and yearly out-of-pocket maximum — that maximum is required by federal law.

Plan availability and benefits vary by county and change every year. Each fall during the Annual Enrollment Period, you should compare your current plan against what is offered for the next year in your ZIP code.

What it covers
  • All Part A and Part B medical services
  • Prescription drugs (in most plans, called MAPD)
  • Routine dental cleanings, exams, and limited dental work
  • Routine vision exams and eyewear allowance
  • Routine hearing exams and hearing aid allowance
  • Fitness benefits such as SilverSneakers
  • Over-the-counter allowances and transportation to medical appointments (varies by plan)
  • Yearly out-of-pocket maximum required by law
What it does NOT cover
  • Care from out-of-network providers (HMO plans) except in emergencies
  • Hospice care (still billed under Original Medicare Part A)
  • Services Medicare itself excludes, such as cosmetic surgery
Who qualifies

You must be enrolled in both Part A and Part B and live in the plan's service area.
