Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)

Optional outpatient prescription drug coverage offered through private insurers approved by Medicare.

About Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)

Medicare Part D helps pay for outpatient prescription drugs. Coverage is offered through stand-alone Prescription Drug Plans (PDPs) that you add to Original Medicare, or it is bundled into a Medicare Advantage plan (MAPD).

Each Part D plan has its own formulary (list of covered drugs), preferred pharmacy network, and tier-based copays. Plans must include at least two drugs in most therapeutic categories and cover six protected drug classes such as antidepressants and antipsychotics.

Recent federal law caps annual out-of-pocket prescription costs for Part D enrollees and offers a Medicare Prescription Payment Plan that lets people spread drug costs across the year. Check Medicare.gov for the current year's cap.

What it covers
  • Brand-name and generic prescription drugs on the plan's formulary
  • Most commercially available vaccines at $0 cost-sharing
  • Insulin, with a federal monthly cost cap
  • Six protected drug classes (e.g., antidepressants, antipsychotics, anticonvulsants)
  • Specialty drugs, often on higher cost tiers
  • Mail-order pharmacy options through preferred networks
What it does NOT cover
  • Drugs already covered under Part A or Part B
  • Over-the-counter medications
  • Drugs used for cosmetic purposes or weight management (with limited exceptions)
Who qualifies

Anyone enrolled in Medicare Part A or Part B who lives in the plan's service area can join.
